George Jecel, director
Breif: Donovan Bailey is so fast that science has no way of capturing him with their very advanced instruments. Build a scientific research facility designed to measure the movements of athletes, ala Eadweard Muybridge.
(1,2) Set built from metallic fluorescent light grids
in order to save money. Simple laminated 1/4” MDF arches allowed assembly in segments using threaded rod. The entire set was constructed using principles of ‘tensegrity’ (there were no screws used except to hold upright braces). Salad bowls and pizza plates were used to construct the “camera” apperati, while and actual running track surface was obtained for Mr. Donovan Bailey’s safety against injury.
(3,4) Images of the maquette used to demonstrate my concept to the director, agency and client. A very helpful tool that enlightens even the most “vision” challenged. In this case we can see the lighting intentions (upright Kino Flos on the outside of the arched tunnel) as well as spacial relationships.
(5) Scrap of one of my inspirations, a cultural
center in New Caledonia, designed by Renzo Piano. The structures are of all natural materials, and formed to mimic the organic forms of many artifacts and foods of the region. I was particularly attracted to the enveloping nature of the forms, how they seemed to hold the participant, which led me to the idea of capturing the scientific subject (Donovan Bailey) in a tunnel.
