Brief:    The title of the spot is “Reflections”, and
hence, an urban, glass/mirrored building was needed to allow the cars a “view” of themselves.

(1,2)  When none were found that fulfilled our
driving needs,  I was assigned to design and build it in Downtown Los Angeles.  After consideration of a few designs I proposed the maquette below (3,4) that would  make the car seem to shift slightly as it drove along the wall surface, creating a more dynamic relationship between the actual car and it’s reflected twin.

(3)  The second Maquette with actual reflected  surfaces, photgraphed here with a scale model  BMW.

(4)  The original wood and paper Maquette used to demonstrate the varying surface dimensions.

An interesting anectdote:  We intended to build this set with blue tinted mirrored 1/8” plexiglass (accepting the waviness of the material), but there was not enough of it available within our schedule.   So, we shifted to a silver mirrored plexiglas with
blue gels applied to the surface.  We found enough of each material, but on the way to pick up all the blue gels from Rosco (many, many rolls), our driver noticed smoke in the direction of
his destination... Yes, it was true, Rosco was BURNING DOWN!

Along with most of their inventory, including our blue gels!  A scramble ensued as we tried to cull from as many distributors as possible the proper blue gel, have them ‘over-nighted’ so we could get the set done in time.  As it was we had very little time and now, we were being forced to pull an all nighter, for two nights in a row, in order to install the set in our limited window.  Phew, that was interesting.
