Jeep Hiker
Zack Snyder, director
Brief: Semi-Rural Jeep dealership, where we can have clear view to all the spankin’ new Jeep models on the showroom floor.
Story: A hiker and his dog arrive at a vista where as the hiker approaches the edge of the rock, the ground beneath him gives way and he falls. Just at the last second though, he hooks his backpack onto a root protruding from the cliff. He looks up to find his faithful dog looking down, and sends him to get help. The dog passes by rangers in SUVs, rescue workiers in a helicopter, kayakers in expedition vehicle mode, through town until finally arriving at the Jeep dealer.
(1) We searched all over central Colorado to find a building that could satisfy our needs, but to no avail. Alas, I had to build one in the parking lot next to our Hotel in Aspen.
(2) This is the rig used for the stunt/rock-break-away gag. It operates using nitrogen fired hydrolic solonoids. I designed and had it built in LA, then brought it out to location. I had to build platforms directly into the cliffsides for the stunt/fall pads/landing, as well as to support the Jeep for driving shots away from the stunt/fall location.
I even built a log footbridge over a raging mountain waterfall/river (that I never got to see finished or shot, just too spread out shooting at locations all over the central Colorado Rockies). I had three construction coordinators working for me at the same time, in three locations: Jeep Dealership; Fall/Stunt location; and steep rapids Footbridge. We quite literally had only four days to build all of these sets, once we found locations, let alone dress two existing locations in Aspen proper!
(3) Another view of the Jeep Dealership set. I had a 60x60 bleached muslin made to span the roof so the interior could be lit to provide beautiful fill light on all the cars.
(4) One of my original concept sketches when we were still thinking of building in LA. Then we thought we could find something in Colorado,
where, we found nothing really... after looking for a week, construction came back as a plan, but in the above mentioned parking-lot.
