Saturn

Brief:  “A portion of This Old House was brought
to you by Saturn”.  These were to be promos for
broadcast on PBS.  Specifically, Christian gave me the brief that both ‘elements” be random in design, so I thought about it.

(1,2)    I worked through the idea that the program This Old House  was really about remodelling, or up-dating an older house... but how old?    Mostly, it seems, it is cold and rainy wherever Bob Villa (or whoever it is now) is when he is trying to repair rot-ten floor joists during an entire bathroom upgrade.

This leads me to feel he is in the northeast a lot,
and it made me think of portraits.  So, I made one
of the rooms a Vicrtorian with a big portrait and an operating fireplace (2).

For the other, I was just pondering how much I really disliike suburban sprawl and the common, repetitive nature of the planned community, so I opted or an 80’s make-over.  In both cases I kept the color palette of our ‘trailers’ intune with our locations and the cars.

(3,5)   Sketches of my concepts for the ‘portions’. I had this idea of the toilet paper flapping behind in the wind, to match the ‘life’ of an actual fire in the fireplace.  It seems to work.  It is funny when I see the spot.  Locations were fun on this, particuarly for the SUV.  We were in Camarillo CA during the harvest period and all the roads that were scouted seemed to be uavailable to us (seems so simple when you think about it, but...).  We ended up onthis stretch of road, which was great with the furrows stretching off beyond.
